A fast moving development of a possible ICE detention facility in Newport has been reported on by multiple outlets. There was a recent Newport City Council Special Meeting on November 12th, 2025 regarding the news. The overwhelming sentiment of the community members were that they did not want an ICE facility in their community. A local community member reported on the meeting.
“They came from every walk of life, were every age and race. The meeting room was packed long before I arrived and the hallways were full. Two screens had been set up but it was difficult to find a place with any view. Folks kept streaming in. Two rooms were added with monitors and they filled up. Then, two more rooms at the Community Center were opened and they also filled with standing room only. All that with ten more minutes to go before comments began. Speakers, listeners, and Council members were in total agreement. The outrage about ICE was shared and palpable. With an air of quiet determination, Mayor Jan Kaplan clearly and repeatedly – stated, “We are going to do everything we can to fight this.” A new article posted on OPB, report that the federal contractor at has backed out of potential Oregon Coast ICE facility at this time. This is people power. The community mobilized rapidly and spoke out in force about their beliefs and their support for their immigrant neighbors. We must all do what we can to fight fascism. We must show up and speak out for our community and neighbors. |
