The Bullshit Billionaire Bailout Bill Passed

We just saw basically every Republican Member of Congress cave to Trump and sell out their constituents on this Bullshit Billionaire Bailout bill. We saw Murkowski capitulate and almost all the GOP representatives betray the American people to pass this bill. We all know that this bill will hurt and kill people. It will have devastating consequences for the majority of Americans as it is the largest transfer of wealth from the lowest-income families to the highest, while saddling future generations with even more debt than before by raising the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

The Democrats in the House and Senate all voted to reject this bill. Hakeem Jeffries successfully delayed the vote for more than eight hours, setting a record for the longest floor speech in House history. Due to his speech, the American people were able to see the vote happen in real time in the light of day, for all of us to witness the betrayal of the American people.

We can be disheartened today.  We can grieve this loss and the coming cruelty. But we cannot lose hope and belief that we will prevail. From the protests that we have held, the general and action committee meetings that we have had, the relationships that we have forged, we are a growing movement and are motivated to bring about the change that we need to see. Let us use this summer to regroup, to plan, to train, to educated ourselves, to continue to build bridges and coalitions, so that we can keep pushing on. We must make every Republican who voted for this bill own their vote every single day while we plan for a better and brighter future.

Lincoln reminded Civil War Americans of those sacrifices when he urged the people of his era to “take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
