Growing Ancestral Roots cultivates community-led solutions that increase access to culturally relevant food, land, and economic opportunity for underserved communities. They maintain community gardens, provide fresh produce in food boxes, host community dinners, and more. Opportunities for volunteering and fundraising efforts will be announced in the newsletter. Indivisible Benton County is partnering with Casa Latinos Unidos in their Food Box Program, designed to alleviate food insecurity and barriers for the Latino community. Learn how to observe ICE. Follow the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC) on Instagram or Facebook for announcements of upcoming trainings, including some that are online. In-person trainings in Benton County occur periodically. We’ll announce upcoming trainings in the newsletter.

The Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC) provides a variety of services to the immigrant community, including the statewide hotline, which deploys the Migra Watch, a trained network of people who monitor and document ICE activity and provide rapid response support.

PIRC also locates people in detention facilities. And PIRC connects people with legal services through an organization called ECO (Equity Corps of Oregon), a coalition of lawyers who provide free legal services to immigrants who are residents of Oregon.

Another branch of PIRC’s work refers families to organizations that provide a range of social services—like money for rent and groceries or mental health services for teens struggling with the emotional trauma when family members disappear. PIRC collaborates with a broad coalition of local groups to meet the specific needs of each family. Due to the high demand for these services, these organizations are all stretched thin, and resources are limited. Community donations are critical to sustain services.

Ask business owners or managers to post signs that declare their support for their immigrant neighbors and opposition to ICE as well as to create a private area for employees, which ICE cannot legally enter without a signed judicial warrant. These are simple steps that businesses can take to protect their employees from ICE and make all immigrants feel welcome in your community.
