Stopping the Landfill Expansion – Immediate Release
All Hands on Deck to Witness
Monday, November 17, at 9 am, the Benton County Board of Commissioners will meet to finalize their decision to approve a permit allowing Republic Services to expand Coffin Butte Landfill. It seems all but certain that they will finalize their approval, but there’s a chance that one of the Commissioners voting to approve (Pat Malone, Nancy Wyse) will have a change of heart or rethink what they are doing.
We’re inviting everyone who can to come bear witness to this moment, in solidarity with the neighborhood anti-expansion activists VNEQS and other groups. It’s alarming how a decision that’s so clear based on the evidence and County values can seemingly be stolen to favor the profit incentives of a large out-of-state corporation, and it’s our hope that witnessing is the first step to reasserting the people’s participation and values.
(You can find more information about the landfill issue and contact information for VNEQS at coffinbuttefacts.org)
You will be going to:
Benton County Kalapuya Building, 4500 SW Research Way in Corvallis
We’re assembling in front of the building at 8:30 am. Signs welcome!
The Commissioners meet in the the Holmes & Shipley Room at 9 am.
Making their vote to approve official is the first item on the agenda (although Chair Wyse may change this at the last minute)
Hope to see you there!
