Violence Blamed on the Left

The recent news — violence blamed on the left, troops sent to Tennessee, fight for health care, California says enough to masked goons.

This week, the country hurtles deeper into political violence and authoritarian targeting. In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, JD Vance and Stephen Miller escalated their rhetoric, promising retribution and vowing to use the power of the DOJ and DHS to “disrupt, dismantle, destroy” what they call “left-wing terrorist networks” -despite the shooter having no ties to left-leaning groups and no known motive. Meanwhile, the Senate narrowly confirmed Trump loyalist Stephen Miran to the Federal Reserve by a 48–47 vote (Lisa Murkowski was the GOP dissent). At the same time, an appeals court blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook, intensifying alarm about the creeping politicization of once-independent institutions.

Threats of a government shutdown loom as the fight over health care intensifies, particularly around protections like Medicaid. Trump has floated extending certain coverage until January in an effort to blunt backlash. In Missouri, Republicans passed a redistricting map designed to dilute Democratic power in Kansas City, sparking legal challenges and a referendum campaign. In California, lawmakers approved a bill prohibiting law enforcement officers, local or federal, from concealing their identities behind masks during operations. In Oregon, vaccine access is collapsing: new federal restrictions on eligibility and pharmacy prescription requirements are leaving many turned away or in limbo just as flu and COVID season begins. And on the ground, Trump ordered the National Guard into Memphis as part of his “lawlessness and disorder” crusade.

We cannot afford to stand still while violence escalates, health care hangs in the balance, and federal power reaches deeper into our cities and institutions. This is the moment to act: volunteer, organize, donate, educate -whatever your capacity, step in. Too many battles demand attention at once: social justice, human rights, immigrant rights, protections for minorities, the environment, health and education, the defense of our history and institutions, corruption, voter suppression. The list is long, and this is no exaggeration. Find your passion, raise its banner, and fight for what you believe in -while you still can protect it. Every act, however small, is a refusal to surrender to fear, and a step toward reclaiming democracy.
